                              The middle school of Gaston-Swansea School District Four of Lexington County, seeks to provide each student with challenging
                              and highly motivating learning experiences.  Located in Gaston, South Carolina, just twenty miles south of Columbia, Sandhills
                              Middle School has a unique student population. It boasts an approximate enrollment of 575 students. There are 36 dedicated and
                              highly trained classroom teachers. The support staff works closely with administration and teachers to help ensure students are
                              offered the best possible education. Grades seven and eight are served at Sandhills Middle School.

Directions to SMS

                   From the Upstate or the Lowcountry on  I-26 
                   
           Take Exit # 115 onto SC Hwy. 321
                               
Follow US Hwy 321 going towards Swansea
                               Travel 8.8 miles into Gaston (we're the little town before Swansea)
                               At the second red light turn right onto Mack Street between the Texaco and the BP station
                               Cross over the railroad tracks and turn left at the stop sign
                               Go around the sharp right curve - this is Meadowfield Road
   
                            Travel 2 miles on Meadowfield Road and Sandhills Middle School will be on the right

                     From Charlotte on I-77
                               Follow I-77 to the south side of Columbia 
                               Take exit #1 toward US Hwy 321 going to Swansea 
                               Make a slight right turn onto SC-73 
                               At the red light turn left onto US Hwy 321 
                               Now, follow the above directions
         
     
                               

                         From Lexington on Highway 6

   
                                  Travel southeast on Hwy. 6 through the town of Lexington
                              Go approximately 20 miles and turn left onto Meadowfield Road 
                              Follow this road about four miles and Sandhills Middle School is on the right
   
                           


Curriculum Overview

                    Sandhills Middle School utilizes the middle school concept for preparing students for high school and beyond. Classes operate on a
                    modified block schedule. Grade level teams integrate social studies, language arts, science, and math.  Focus is placed in critical
                    thinking and problem-solving skills that will prepare students for the rigors of high school. Technology is integrated into all curriculum
                    areas. Special field trips are one of the highlights of the middle school experience.

        Related Arts
                Sandhills Middle School offers a variety of exploratory classes for all students.  Selection include Teen Wellness, Career Education,
                    Physical Education, Art, and Chorus. Students also may elect to participate in Band, French or Spanish, Drama or Performing Arts. 
                    Seventh and eighth graders work with the guidance counselor to select two electives for each semester. 

        Extra Curricular Activities
                Students at Sandhills Middle School have a variety of extra curricular activities from which to choose.  Activities available to students are
                    Student Council, Yearbook, Varsity, Junior Varsity, and B-team athletics, Marching Band, and Beta Club.

          School and Community Activities
        
         Sandhills Middle School holds many events throughout the year to involve parents and the community in education. Student-Led Conferences,
                     a Performing Arts Festival, and School Improvement Council are among the activities in which parents can participate.


Registration Information

            All students
               
   All students, new or returning to the district, must have two proofs of residence (one from EACH of the following categories).
                           
Category A
                               Tax receipt showing both property and dwelling are in Lexington Four's attendance area; mortgage statement or receipt; rental or lease
                               agreement showing the address of the dwelling, the landlord’s name, address, and telephone number (statements from apartment
                               complexes, or other multiple family dwellings must be on letterhead stationary showing appropriate information as mentioned above).
                               RENT RECEIPTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
                           
Category B
                               Cable television bill, telephone bill (cell phone bill will not be accepted) utility bill such as electric/gas or water/sewer (If these items
                               are included in Rental Agreement, then it must be stated in the agreement.)
        
            New Enrollees
               
  A current immunization record, a copy of your child's birth certificate and social security card, a withdrawal form (if the student is coming
                      from another school), and two proofs of residence as mentioned above.

 


Our School District


                Gaston-Swansea School District Four of Lexington County is a small, rural school district. However, our district continues to grow at a steady rate. 
                   In addition to Sandhills Middle School, there are two primary schools, Swansea Primary and Frances Mack Primary, housing Child Development
                   through second grade. Sandhills Elementary, serves grades three and four, and Sandhills Intermediate, serves grades five and six. One high school
                   in the district, Swansea High, includes Freshman Academy and grades ten through twelve.  With the support of the community, parents, and
                   dedicated faculty and staff, Gaston-Swansea School District Four is on the cutting edge of educational horizons.
