On January 6, 2017 a meeting was held with our energy consultants and representatives from SCE&G.  At this point, SCE&G is conducting several tests to make sure their equipment can handle the capacity of solar energy that will be transferred to them from the Early Childhood Center, Sandhills Middle School, and Swansea High School.  I will update you as this project progresses.

Weather Issue Procedures for Maintenance and Transportation

posted Jan 5, 2017, 6:01 AM by Dave Toole

I hope everyone had a good holiday season.  This weekend we are expecting winter weather conditions that would include precipitation and freezing rain.  We do not expect any issues for the opening of school on Monday morning, but we want to always be prudent and prepared.  In cases like this, maintenance personnel are on alert.  We add insulation to any exterior pipes that may require it.  The maintenance workers will load a salt compound on their trucks as well.  We will monitor the weather and check the walkways and entrances to the schools and address any frozen areas as needed.

Anytime we anticipate icy conditions this is a standard mode of operation for maintenance personnel.  In turn, transportation will monitor the road conditions.  In this case, it is unlikely that the roads will have ice on Monday morning.  However, with precipitation or melting ice the dirt roads could become an issue.  We will work on the side of caution and notify parents of any issues with transportation.

Daily Bus Updates

posted Nov 30, 2016, 8:58 AM by Dave Toole

The Transportation Department deals with a shortage of drivers from time to time.  The call out notification system is not the best way to communicate any daily delays to parents.  When the call out system has been utilized the Transportation Department is flooded with phone calls from parents asking what the call was about.

In an effort to be efficient and effective in communicating with parents we are creating a link on the district website where parents can click and receive daily notifications of any changes or delays with bus routes.

We will notify parents via Facebook and other means of this way to get current bus information.

LED Lighting

posted Nov 30, 2016, 8:46 AM by Dave Toole

The district is in the process of moving to LED lighting throughout our facilities.  We are currently receiving sample LED tubes to determine which is the best one for our needs.  We will then begin to switch out our existing tubes with the new LED tubes. SCE&G offers a rebate incentive for each bulb.  This rebate will cover approximately half of the cost of each bulb.  It is estimated that the LED bulbs will reduce the energy consumption by approximately 60% per fixture.  LED bulbs have a life expectancy of 5-10 years.

The district will resume a normal schedule starting on October 10, 2016.  All district facilities have been checked for issues from the recent storm.  We have been in communication with Lexington County Emergency Management in regards to road conditions.  We are independently checking roads that have been known to have issues with excessive rain.  We will be contacting those parents to make alternative arrangements for bus stops.  Lexington County has issued a press release that Lexington 4 will resume a normal schedule tomorrow.  The Facebook page and district website will also be updates with this information.
